Young and old are being thrown on the scrapheap
I have two degrees, two post-graduate qualifications, experience in two job sectors (journalism and education) ... and no job. I’m in my 40s and fear I will spend a long time on the dole and, perhaps, not have the chance to put my qualifications and experience to use again.
I also see young students who are working hard to gain degrees resigned to the fact that they will not find work, they will not get the home they want or live the life they had thought they were working for.
The concepts of aspiration and meritocracy are now beyond a joke. Young and old are being thrown on the scrapheap and we need to start fighting back through our unions and in our communities. Let’s not let it be like the 80s again!
