Xtrax Youth Service, and Hastings Borough Council TN34
One of the most deprived towns in the UK faces some of the heaviest cuts, with the local council shedding 10% of it’s workforce this year. Also hit are charities which try to help the most vulnerable people in the town, especially the young. From a recent BBC report:
The group Xtrax, which works to help disadvantaged young people into work, has lost its government grant.
“We lose staff, expertise and obviously the chance for young people to make a better life for themselves.” said Andy Batsford from Xtrax.
“My job is to make people’s lives consistent and supported and all I see around me are cuts to the most disadvantaged people, ones that find life difficult enough as it is.”
“Now we’ve got people telling then that they are not actually worth the money.”
” Some of these people don’t even know they have got a ladder of opportunity and we have shown them the way to that ladder. What we are afraid of now is that ladder might be pulled away from under them and I fear for them, I fear for our town “
