Ventnor Botanic Garden PO38
Isle of Wight Council voted to withdraw its £500,000 annual funding for the botanical garden in Ventnor and to shut off free access and charge for its use. The garden is home to one of the largest collections of southern hemisphere plants in the UK, but is also an important community hub for the whole area; schools use it as a site to offer children free trips to explore the exotic plants.
As a Grade II registered garden, Ventnor Botanic Garden must remain a public space, but there are fears that the cuts may mean specialist staff will have to go, putting the survival of the plant collection under threat.
