Margaret Stanhope Centre, South Staffs and Shropshire DE
South Staffordshire PCT are decomissioning a percentage of the in-patient beds available to people with mental health problems in the south staffordshire area (Tamworh, Burton, Lichfield, Cannock, Stafford and surrounds). There is a current public consultation.
The prefered option of the PCT is to close the maragret stanhope centre located in Burton Upon Trent completely, leaving those who need in-patient care with the prospect of having to be placed in beds in tamworth and stafford. It is aurgued this is unfair for people in hospital who have no choice of being there through sections of the mental health act and relatives who may have to travel 50 mile round trips to visit people who have serious mental health problems.
This decision is based upon the “apparent” £792,000 investment in crisis and home treatment which enables people to be treated in their home. I Say “apparent” as no extra jobs were created, they merely redeployed staff from wards to community jobs after lowering the ward establishments (reducing number of staff on a shift to shift basis) and ever since wards have been dangerously staffed, many incidents brushed under the carpet and a long line of bank and agency staff have graced the wards with their presence who have no knowledge of patients or the hospitals they work in for the day!
anyway this isnt the issue….people in Burton are very sceptical that the closure of the maragret stanhope centre is a done deal and the consultation is merely for lip service.
At this moment in time there has been an on-line petition with over 6000 signatures against the closure, there is an open questioning to the PCT on the 24th November where the PCT and mental health trust will be asked many challenging questions. If this closure goes ahead with the amount of strong opposition very serious questions need to be asked of South Staffordshire PCT at parlimentary level.
This is the trust that commissioned Mid-Staffs whilst people were clinically neglected, the trust that now commissions a mid-staffs hospital that now has no accident and emeorgency at night…a PCT that commissions Burton Hospitals which is in financial difficultiues that bound to have effect on patient care in the future after savage cuts in their commissioning intentions….the same PCT that closed all mental health day centres in the county (not for financial reasons apparently) despite opposition from people who used the services…and now leaving burton without any in-patient facilites for the most vulberable section of people with mental illness requiring hospital….but hang on, once the PCT has done this damage they are packing up to join a different healthboard and no one will be about to be accountable when it all goes wrong.
