Closure of Birch Ward at St Cross hospital in Warwickshire
Birch ward (a general ward) was closed late last year to save £1 million a year.
The general medical ward had 22 beds, mainly for Rugby residents recovering from operations at Coventry’s University Hospital.
A whistleblower said “This is not any ward at St Cross, this is a medical ward with 22 beds that are always full.
“We understand they need to save money but how is this not going to affect patients in and around Rugby?
“As soon as (St Cross) is overflowing with patients again, especially with winter setting in, they will reopen the ward and staff it with agency staff. How is that saving the NHS money?
“Surely they can save money elsewhere in the NHS than having to close a ward that could possibly reopen in the winter months?”
