Belfast Health and Social Care Trust, the NHS trust covering Belfast, is cutting its workforce by the equivalent of 1,755 full-time staff during 2010/11, including temporary, bank and agency staff.

The Trust is actually cutting 1,855 posts - nine percent of its entire workforce - but is recruiting to 100 new clinical posts at the same time. The breakdown of the staffing cuts is as follows:

Medical and dental - 120
Nursing - 620
Social services - 185
Ancillary and general - 320
Professional and technical - 325

The Trust must save £69.5m in 2010/11 - five percent of total expenditure - as it tries to clear historical deficits inherited from the trusts that merged to form it in 2007.
