NHS and social care cuts - False Economy updates

This is a short article to signpost new information about cuts around the UK which we've uploaded to the site.

Over the past few months, we've been looking through council budgets and appendices, and news reports, to get a better idea of cuts councils have made in their 2012 - 2013 budgets.

You can find a list of the cuts entered to date here. Work is still continuing and we have a lot more to do, but it's worth taking a look at the list to get an idea of the way cuts are rolling out in this second year.

Areas of real concern include reductions to spending on youth services at councils like Derbyshire and Norfolk county councils to the contining tightening of eligibility for social care at councils like Lancashire.

Councils like Newcastle are proposing caps on care spending - a development which could have worrying implications for people on high-cost care packages. You'll also note that some councils are considering reducing the number of looked after children on their rolls.

Library closures continue apace: five libraries have closed in Bolton and Friern Barnet library was recently shut in Barnet (local people continue to fight that closure with a People's Library every Saturday at the site).

We're running further analysis on some of these cuts, so will return with more information as that analysis is completed.

NHS cuts and privatisation

You will see from the list that we've also started entering information about NHS cuts and privatisation proposals and deals. We will continue to add to the list over the coming weeks as we find more information.
